The 2022 midterm elections have Democrat Wes Moore and Republican Dan Cox facing off against each other for the seat as Maryland’s governor. As things currently stand, Moore is predicted to win the election, and with it, to become Maryland’s first Black governor.
Though Maryland is very much a blue state, the moderate Republican incumbent governor, Larry Hogan remains popular. A Gonzalez poll conducted in 2019 showed a statewide approval rating of 78%, ratings high among both Republicans and Democrats. In 2018, Hogan was re-elected with overwhelming support, being the Maryland gubernatorial candidate to receive the most votes. Hogan has not endorsed either of the candidates, stating in an interview that Kelly Schulz’s loss in the July primary against Dan Cox was “a big loss for the Republican party”, with “no chance of saving that governor seat”.
With so much riding on the shoulders of Moore, as his nomination is incredibly monumental for the state of Maryland, here is a quick recap of Democrat candidate Wes Moore:
Moore took over in 2017 as the CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, an non-profit organization created to alleviate poverty in New York City.
In 2012, Moore released his bestseller, The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates, about two men with similar circumstances leading completely different lives, bringing to light the delicate nature of the concept of the “land of opportunity”.
Moore has never held an elected office before.
After receiving his Associate’s Degree from Valley Forge Military College and graduating with Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University, Moore went on to earn a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University.
As a combat veteran, Moore served as a White House Fellow and paratrooper and a captain of the 82nd Windborne.
